About Feeding Therapy

At Newbridge, feeding therapy is a playful, non-invasive therapy designed to gently increase your child’s comfort in eating foods of varied colors, textures, smells, and tastes. It is based on developmental principles, encouraging children to engage in play with unfamiliar foods as well as foods they don’t care for – gradually working toward greater comfort with tasting, chewing, and eating.

At Newbridge, we use the Sequential Oral Sensory (SOS) Approach to Feeding. Our feeding therapy process is a gradual progression that includes the following steps as your child becomes comfortable:

  • Encouraging your child to tolerate being in the same room with the food
  • Smelling
  • Touching
  • Tasting
  • Chewing and Swallowing

Please note that it may take several sessions to help your child become accustomed to a given food, but as he or she becomes confident they’ll feel safer adding others.

Each child’s journey with food therapy is unique. And using our holistic model, we take into consideration all health and environmental factors that may be causing your child anxiety with eating certain foods. You should also keep in mind that parents and caregivers are key to this form of therapy, and your participation is essential in your child’s progress at home and in other settings.
