What Should Parents Know About PANS/PANDAS?

We know you take your children’s health seriously. And when something is wrong with your child, sometimes it feels as if the entire world disappears and their illness is all you can think about. Here at Newbridge, we understand that illnesses in children can be difficult to deal with. This is why we’ll work with you and your child every step of the way.

What Is PANDAS?

Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Strep (PANDAS) is a diagnosis given to children who have a sudden or abrupt onset of OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder) and/or Tics (involuntary movement disorder) in childhood, following a Streptococcus (GABHS) or “strep” infection.

This condition can also involve a sudden onset of symptoms such as:

  • Anxiety
  • Emotional lability or depression
  • Behavioral changes
  • Poor school performance
  • Sensory or motor disturbances.

You should also note that not every child has traditional symptoms of a strep infection, and a thorough medical diagnosis is necessary for a proper recommendation of treatment.

What Is PANS?

PANS is a broader illness that can be difficult to diagnose. And if your child develops this condition, the road forward can seem daunting.

PANS is the categorization used when a specific infectious trigger isn’t identified, and similar symptoms can be triggered by more than one infection. Some of these infections include:

  • Lyme borreliosis
  • Bartonella
  • Mycoplasma
  • Influenza
  • Coxsackievirus
  • Varicella
  • Human herpes virus 6
  • EBV
  • The common cold

PANS/PANDAS Symptoms and Treatment

Common symptoms of both PANS and PANDAS include:

  • Anxiety (specifically separation anxiety)
  • Atypical anorexia or disordered eating
  • Urinary frequency
  • OCD and tics
  • Handwriting difficulty
  • Change in cognition
  • Mood swings and/or depression
  • Irritability, aggression, oppositional behaviors
  • Behavioral regression (baby talk, throwing tantrums, etc.)
  • Sensory or motor abnormalities

While there aren’t any definitive guidelines for treating PANS or PANDAS, here at Newbridge, we recognize that your child is unique. As such, the most optimal treatment plan may vary depending on your child’s overall condition. Our Functional Medicine approach to PANS/PANDAS identifies and treats root causes while supporting and helping balance the immune system, not suppressing it.
